His last words were Shakespeare's immortal lines about "the way to The gruff-voiced old man known millions through motion pictures. radio and the theater for half a century was stricken at his home Sunday night as he sat in his familiar wheelchair reciting his favorite Shakespeare soliloquy. In it Macbeth says: And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle, Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more.

The patriarch of American tors suddenly could, not catch his breath. Mrs. J. Sinks Into Coma When he continued to gasp, they called his doctor, John Ewing, who rushed the veteran actor to Valley Hospital.

At nidnight he sank into a coma. Then he suffered a second heart attack. He died last night with the Wheeler family and doctor at his bedside. His sister, Ethel Barrymore, was too shocked to comment immediately and withdrew into seclusion. Friends said she saw her brother last week and remarked he was looking well.

The actor had been under daily care by a doctor for past two weeks. For years he had suffered from uremic poisoning, kidney ailment, which weakened his condition, Dr. Ewing said. Barrymore's last appearance before the public was his regular CBS radio show, "The Hallmark Hall of last Sunday. His friend, Edward Arnold, will substitute for him next Sunday.

The last movie of the oldest the Barrymores was "Lone Star" with Ava Gardner and Clark Gable, in 1952. Barrymore still was under contract at MGM, where he had worked since 1926. The cantankerous actor recently grumbled that he wanted to work, and demanded the studio give him roles or allow him to appear on television. Radio fans remember him best for his annual portrayal of grumpy Scrooge on the CBS Yuletide version of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." To movie-goers he was the great star of the recent "Dr. Kildare series and film classics as "Grand "Dinner at "Camille" and "Captains He won an Academy Award in 1931 for his performance in "A Free Soul." His only appearance with his famous sister, Ethel, and brother, John, was in "Rasputin and the Lionel's death leaves Ethel the only survivor of the "royal family." John died in 1942.

Lionel, the son of the great actor Maurice Barrymore and Georgia Drew, was born April 28, 1878, Philadelphia to inherit the mantle of a theatrical family. He made his stage debut at the age of 5 with his parents, and appeared with his grandmother, Louisa Drew, later, several plays. He traveled the world over with stock companies and once broke away from acting to study art in Paris. Works As Illustrator Barrymore worked as a New York illustrator for a year. But his brother, by then a great figure on the American stage, urged Lionel to co-star with him on the stage.

They played in "The "The Jest" and other plays. The late director, D. W. Griffith, brought Barrymore to films in 1909 and the actor eventually retired from the stage. With the advent of talking pictures he tried his hand at directing, but returned to a new acting career with "A Free Barrymore's first wife, Doris Rankin, divorced him in 1923.
