Waco-area news briefs: FEMA opens disaster recovery center in Temple (2024)

Temple FEMA office

FEMA has opened a disaster recovery centers in Bell County to provide one-on-one help to Texans affected by the severe storms and flooding April 26-June 5.

The centers is at Tarver Elementary School, 7949 Stonehollow, in Temple.

The centers will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. All centers are accessible to people with disabilities or access and functional needs and are equipped with assistive technology.

Camp Cook S’More

Spots are still available for Camp Cook S’More, a summer cooking school, for ages 6-14.

Camp times are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at The Heir’s Table, 121 N. Hewitt Dr., Suite C, Hewitt.

Friends of Cameron Park

Friends of Cameron Park meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the covered pavilion at The Redwood Shelter in Cameron Park.

The group will vote on officers and enjoy a talk about The Trees in Cameron Park from local Waco tree enthusiast Rick Allen.

MPO planning

The Waco Metropolitan Planning Organization is accepting public comments through Wednesday on an amendment to the 2045 Metropolitan Transportation Plan, an amendment to the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan and a draft amendment to the Unified Planning Work Program.

Comments will be presented at an MPO policy board meeting Thursday.

Public school issues

VoteforALLkids.org will hold an information session at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Waco-McLennan County Central Library, 1717 Austin Ave., outlining public school issues that are likely to come before the Texas Legislature next session.

Raise Your Hand Texas Senior Regional Advocacy Director Amy Dodson will serve as guest speaker. The session is intended to provide information about voting for pro-public school candidates.

Youth Chorus auditions

Youth Chorus of Central Texas is holding auditions Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. YCCT has openings for singers in grades 3-12 for the 2024-25 season.

City offices closing

City of Waco offices will be closed on Wednesday, June 19 for Juneteenth.

Residents with a Wednesday trash collection day will have their gray waste carts and green yard waste carts collected later on Thursday.

Cameron Park Zoo, Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, Cottonwood Creek Golf Course and Waco Mammoth National Monument will be open on Wednesday.

Father Fest

Legends Car and Truck Club will hold a Father Fest Truck and Car Show at 11 a.m. June 22 at University High School, 3201 S. New Road.

Entry fee is $25, with 200 spots available.

Alzheimer’s Expo

The McLennan County Alzheimer’s Expo will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 26 at First Baptist Church of Woodway, 101 N. Ritchie Road.

There is no cost to attend.

The event is intended to provide information for people living with or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia. It will include a catered lunch and panel discussion, breakout sessions, consultation stations, a resource fair and vendor fair.

There also will be education sessions from the Alzheimer’s Association, Adult Protective Services and more, as well as one-on one-stations with local experts highlighting caregiver support, legal issues and senior health.

The panel discussion will include a gerontologist, a nurse, a social worker, an Alzheimer’s Association representative and a loved one of someone with Alzheimer’s.

Summer art camps

Cultivate 7twelve, 712 Austin Ave., will hold art summer camps for kids, with four weeklong half-day sessions available: 8 a.m. to noon or 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. June 24-27 or July 1-4.

Age groups are 6-12 and 13-plus.

Cost is $150 per child. A registration link is available on the Cultivate 7twelve Facebook page.
